ISO 8583 response code: 41

The card has been reported lost by the cardholder and the issuer is instructing that it be retained. A final decline that will not succeed on any retry.

Lost cardHard decline

Retrying the same request will fail the same way.

What it means

41 is one of the two capture codes that name their reason, the other being 43 for a stolen card. The issuer has a lost-card report on file and will decline every transaction on that number. As with all capture codes, the reason is not for disclosure to the person presenting the card, and in card-not-present flows there is nothing to capture — the only actionable part is the decline itself.

Common causes

  • The cardholder reported the card lost and it has not yet been replaced.
  • A stored credential or subscription is still charging a card number the cardholder has since reported and replaced.

How to fix it

  1. Stop using the card. Delete or deactivate any stored credential for it — continuing to bill a reported card generates decline volume that counts against you.
  2. Ask the cardholder for a new payment method through your normal update flow, without stating the reason returned.
  3. For recurring billing, consider an account updater service with your acquirer. It supplies replacement card numbers before the charge fails.

Frequently asked questions

Should the customer be told the card was reported lost?
No. Present it as a generic decline. The card schemes expect capture and fraud-related reasons to be withheld from whoever is at the terminal, since that person is not necessarily the cardholder.
